When you think about passport application what is the first question that you ask yourself, is it where do i need to submit the form? Or what documents will i need for Passport application? There are a range of documents like your Election ID, Aadhar Card, Bank Passbook & Birth Certificate etc that you could carry along with you while submitting your Passport Application.
In today’s Digital India the most Important document that you hold would be your Aadhar Card & if you do not have one then you cannot apply for a host of different services that include applying for SIM card from a telecom provider or even while opening a Bank account.
The Aadhar Card not only acts as a POI(Proof of Identity) but also as a POA(Proof of Address).
Yes, the most important document that you would need to produce while applying for your Passport would be your Aadhar Card and it does not matter if you are applying for new passport, renewing your old passport, passport application for minors or even a tatkal passport. It is not necessary that you have the physical copy of your Aadhar card which you receive a few weeks after applying for one, all you need is your E-Aadhar or Aadhar letter/card (a letter electronically generated from the UIDAI website) which as it stands confirmed by the UIDAI in statement that the E-Aadhar or the cut-away portion of the Aadhar letter with digital signature is counted as valid POI & POA
Note : At present the Aadhar card is Mandatory for passport application, However this is still pending further decision from the Supreme Court.
So, for now since the Aadhar card is a mandatory document required while applying for a Passport, the E-Aadhar or the Aadhar Letter/card is taken into consideration while applying.
Even though your Aadhar Card acts as a POI as well as POA it is always better to be safe rather than sorry and carry alternatives for both.
Note : At present the Aadhar card is Mandatory while applying for a Passport, However this is still pending further decision from the Supreme Court.
